During the day, try to notice the people around you. Sit with someone who seems alone, start a conversation with someone you do not usually talk to, thank someone who has supported you, or simply remind a friend that you are there for them. Small actions such as smiling, listening, including others, or sending a supportive message can make someone feel noticed and valued.
You can also take a moment to reflect on your own wellbeing. Think about how you have been feeling recently, what has been stressful, and who you could talk to when you need support. If a friend opens up to you, you do not need to have all the answers. Being present, listening without judgement, and encouraging them to speak with a trusted adult or counsellor can already be meaningful.
Most importantly, R U OK? Day is about making care and connection part of everyday school life—not just something we think about once a year.
To support this message at our school, the Psychology Club joined the R U OK? Day activities by sharing small bags of sweets with warm, encouraging message cards and creating posters to raise awareness about mental wellbeing.
R U OK? Day is an annual mental health awareness initiative that encourages people to check in with those around them, start meaningful conversations, and remind others that they are not alone.
Through these simple but thoughtful actions, we hoped to create a more caring school environment, encourage students to look out for one another, and show that even a small conversation or kind gesture can make a meaningful difference.
There are many simple ways students can take part in R U OK? Day. You can check in with a friend or classmate, ask how they have been feeling, and take the time to genuinely listen to their answer. You can also write a kind or encouraging message for someone.
